Rice Plantation Day in Nepal – "Ropain Diwas" or "Asar 15"
National Rice Plantation Day, known as Dhan Diwas or Rastriya Dhan Ropai 15 Ashad, is celebrated around 29 June according to the Nepali Calendar. The Ropai diwas is a vibrant agricultural festival celebrated throughout the country, marking the start of the rice planting season.
Why is 15th Ashad celebrated as Rice Plantation Day?
Nepal is an agricultural country, and rice is the major food grain. It is grown in larger volumes than corn, millet, and wheat. The monsoon begins from June/July in Nepal, making the land ready for plantation. Farmers believe that starting the plantation day on 15th Ashad will lead fruitful harvest.
How do farmers celebrate Rice plantation day as a festival?

Since morning, villagers and families have gathered in the muddy plantation field for seeding together. First, they divide their duties for the day like, making the muddy field plain, some make a little bar on the side of the field to collect the water for paddy, some come with an ox to plough the field and make the area softer and muddy. Once the area is plain and men and women gather to plant rice seeds. They sing a Nepali folk song called Ashare Bhaka to keep their spirit high. At the same time, they splash the mud and muddy water on each other, making the Ropai fun. Once they finish the plantation, they are served beaten rice and yogurt (Dahi and Chura and banana) as a snack will be offered by the landlord.
