Designated a Ramsar site in 2007 and resting within the Shey Phoksundo National Park, its age is estimated to be around 30,000 years. The southern end of the lake cradles the charming village of Ringmo, adorned with 20 stupas and a Bön Gompa, adding a touch of cultural intrigue to the scenery.

The best time for Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is during the spring (April-June), and autumn (Mid-September to December) are the best time to trek in Phoksundo Lake Trek of Dolpo region. The weather and temperature are warm, clear skies and dry for trekking. The winter (January and february) is freezing and guest house may remains close. The summer season is rainny cause flood, sleppry, and poor visibility. Pack for diverse weather conditions, as the mountains can experience sudden changes in temperature. In the morning, explore the colorful, vibrant city of Kathmandu. Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square and Monkey Temple or enjoy at “Dream of Garden” in Thamel, and late afternoon fly to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj is a town near the Indian border, Bardia National Park, and a Gateway to the Far West. Evening visit the local market, mini-zoo. Overnight at the Hotel.

03Day

Fly to Juphal, the starting point of the Phoksundo Lake trek. From here, we begin our trek ascending to the southeast over Thulo Bheri Valley, then stroll over pretty fields to the village of Kalagaunda. We follow the Bheri River and pass Roop Ghar and finally reach the Dunai village.

04Day

We depart Dunai after breakfast, trekking down to Bheri River, cross a suspension bridge, follow the river bank to Sulighat, head north and pass through Shey Phoksundo National Park check-post. The rough trail climbs up to the windy Suli Ghad River and walks through a tropical walnut and maple forest. We enjoy the flapping prayer flags, pleasant waterfalls, verdant flora, to enter Shyanta village, then climb for final hour uphill along the narrow trail to reach the Chhepka village.

Today we walk through cedar forest crossing Rechi and Samduwa to get to Jharana, meaning waterfall, where we enjoy in front of the fantastic 303 m Waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Nepal, and a distant view of Phoksundo Lake.

07Day

After a glimpse of local life and their culture, customs, and traditions, walk to Phoksundo Lake. Phoksundo Lake is the deepest lake in Nepal, and religiously it is important as Buddhists and Bonpo followers believe that the lake contains the underwater palace and Tantric Mandala of Spirits. The lake is famous for it turquoise color and breathtaking scenery.

Remember: Ringmo to Phoksundo Lake is a day trip that is 1.5km only. Evening back to Ringmo for a night.

  • Bid farewell to Phoksundo and embrace Chhepka's charm:
  • embark on the 19 km descent to Chhekpa through serene forest and landscapes. The Phoksundo Khola nad Bheri River will serenade your journey
  • We trek back to Shyanta Village today, following our footprint via Polam, Jharana, Samduwa, Rechi, and Chhepka.

Chhepka to Jhupal is a mostly downhill trek that takes about 5/6 hours covering 14-16 km. Passing through forests, meadows, villages, and river valleys makes every step memorable. Juphal awaits, where your journey ends and adventure begins.
