Best Time to go

Shalu- Nartang Trek in Tibet/ China is best undertaken between April to October. This month, the weather is generally stable, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies. This time also includes the Tibetan New Year (Lhosar), offering a rich cultural experience and vibrant surroundings throughout the Tibetan Autonomous Region.

01Day

Welcome to the Roof of the World! Upon arrival in Lhasa, you’ll be picked up and transferred to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day resting and adjusting to the altitude.

02Day

On this day, visit Drepung Monastery, once the largest in Tibet, and witness the famous monk debates at Sera Monastery.

03Day

Today you will explore the heart of Tibetan Buddhism, from the iconic Potala Palace to the sacred Jokhang Temple and bustling Barkhor Bazaar.

04Day

Early morning drive from Lhasa to Shigatse, crossing Gampala Pass (4,790m) for a stunning view of Yamdrok-tso Lake (4,400m). Enjoy distant sights of snow-capped Mount Nyenchen Khangsar (7,191m), the highest peak near Lhasa.

We’ll see the Karola Glacier from the roadside and stop at Manak Dam Lake to hang prayer flags at Simila Pass. Then, we drive to Gyantse to visit Pelkor Monastery, the Gyantse Kumbum, and see the Gyantse Fortress from a distance.

Next, we head to Shalu Monastery, known for the great Buddhist master Buton Rinchendrub. Nearby, we begin our trekking journey, walking a few kilometers to reach our first campsite, where we’ll stay overnight.

05Day

We start with a gentle walk through peaceful villages, cross a charming gorge, and reach the herders’ camp. After a cozy lunch at Eagle Nest, we hike uphill, spotting playful blue sheep and snow chickens along the way. Have fun building your own Mani stone. We end the day at Lhamachen (4,800m). Take your time and enjoy every moment—it’s about a 6-hour journey.

06Day

Trek through farmland to Ngor Village, known for Ngor Monastery, its Sanskrit library, and Newar-style murals.Cross the Char-la Pass (4,550m), once a trade route between Shalu and Sakya.
Hike over steep rocky slopes, pass villages, saddles, and a power line on the way to Nartang.
From there, drive to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and home of the Panchen Lama.
Overnight in Shigatse.

07Day

Today we finish the Yamdrok Lake trek and drive to Gyantse, a town rich in culture and history. On the way, visit Taglung Monastery in a vibrant summer trade town, and Ralung Monastery, the seat of the Drukpa Kagyu lineage.Enjoy stunning views of the Karola Glacier (5,020m) and Nojing Kangsang Glacier before arriving in Gyantse.

08Day

After breakfast, we trek to Upper Lungsang (4,060m). Along the way, pass Ripu Hermitage, peaceful floodplains, Phunup Village, and Showa-la Pass. Experience the simple, beautiful life of Tibetan farmers and their Buddhist traditions.

09Day

Trek to Ngor Village, visit the historic monastery, and cross the Char-la Pass (4,550m).
Pass villages and rocky terrain to reach Nartang, then drive to Shigatse for an overnight stay.

On this day, drive towards world’s highest monastery and also a popular path to Everest Base Camp. Explore the beautiful place and stay overnight at Rongbuk Monastery.

Drive about 220 km to Nyalam. Visit Milerepa cave on the way, enjoy the scenic drive throughout the day.

We depart today little early as we have long way to drive toward border town to Nepal. It is one of the best overland drive on the friendship highway between Nepal and Tibet. As now a new route has been opened from Kyirong a fantastic traverse to be witnessed through the Langtang region.

Things to Consider before Tibet Trekking:

If you’re going to Tibet for the first time, for tour or trek, don’t miss out these points to enhance your Tibet travel experience.

Travel Permits

  • Foreigners cannot travel independently in Tibet without issuing a travel permit.
  • We will arrange Alien Travel Permit and Tibet Travel Permit along with other regional permission.
  • You only need a valid Visa and we will guide you through the process of Visa application.

Altitude Sickness

  • Since Lhasa is at 3,650m you need to acclimatize two days from your arrival day in order to avoid altitude sickness.
  • We have planned two to three days of acclimatization in Lhasa so that your body doesn’t get shock and gets used to the higher altitude terrain.
  • Hydrate yourself a lot, rest and avoid any sort of heavy physical workout during your first days.

No Trekking Experience is Mandatory

  • No, you do not need any prior trekking experience to travel to Tibet and do Shalu- Nartang adventure.
  • It is a beginner-level, low-altitude trek.
  • While your experience is beneficial, Shalu- Nartang trek is done with daily walking of 4 to 6 hrs in gentle terrain and minimal elevation change.
  • Basic fitness and being comforatable while walking are enough to complete this journey.

Simple Lodge-based and Camping Accommodation

  • You’ll stay on three-star Tibetan-style hotel in Lhasa and Shigatse, whereas on trekking days, you’ll stay at local teahouses and camps. Facilities are limited so prepare yourself for wilderness experience.

NO public Transportation

  • All ground transportation in Tibet are private. You’ll travel in private and licensed vehicle with an experienced driver who will make stops at beautiful sights on your request.
  • You’ll have the company of a Local guide who gives you necessary information about the place you’re travelling through.

Solo is not Allowed

  • You cannot do solo trekking in Tibet as it is highly restrictive area.

Limited Facilities

  • Brace yourself because the connectivity to mobile network is weak and often unavailable during remote areas trekking. Having a guide is highly mandatory and useful in such situations.
  • You can also make use of this opportunity to get disconnected from mobile and technology and live freely into the wild.

Food Options are Limited

  • There aren’t many food options available during the trek. In major cities like Lhasa and Shigatse, there are availability of Tibetan, Chinese and Nepali cuisines. But during the trek, Tibetan food like soup, Tibetan bread, noodles and vegetables, rice are provided.

  • Warm layer of jacket and thermal for colder nights
  • Snacks with rich carbs are highly suggested
  • Personal first- aid kit with essential medicines for cuts and wounds

Use local Currency and Always have Cash

  • The local currency used in Tibet is Chinese Yuan.
  • Always carry cash while trekking.
  • Most rural parts of Tibet do not accept fonepay or cards or mobile payment.
  • Tipping your guide and driver is always appreciated.

Always Respect Local Culture and Tradition

  • Rotate clockwise while you’re walking in a religious shrines or monasteries.
  • Don’t touch or sit on the stupas and sculptures.
  • Ask for permission before clicking pictures of the local people.
  • Dress modestly and always respect the local people.
